‘It has to be’ – Ex-Red says only one person should succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager. Former Liverpool player Dominic Matteo has claimed the only man who should replace Jurgen Klopp as Reds manager in the summer is current Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou.
The 58-year-old was only named manager of the North London-based outfit in the summer after a successful spell in charge of Celtic but the Greek-born tactician has earned plaudits for bringing an attacking and exciting style of play to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
When Klopp stated in January that he’d be leaving Merseyside at the end of the current season, Xabi Alonso emerged as the favourite to replace him, but the former Reds midfielder is instead poised to stay with his current club Bayer Leverkusen for the foreseeable future.
Ruben Amorim, the manager of Sporting Lisbon, is suddenly the new frontrunner to take over at Anfield next season, with his team currently leading the Portuguese top division.
“In terms of who replaces Jurgen Klopp, Ange Postecoglou at Spurs has to be it for me,” Matteo told William Hill. “He plays the appropriate brand of game that would be suitable for Liverpool, and I don’t think the nature of the job
“He plays the perfect sort of game that would be suited at Liverpool, and I don’t think the nature of the position would affect him. I’ve been impressed by his first season at Spurs; the way he handles the media and his team plays on the front foot is admirable.
“He appears to be a superb man-manager, which is required at this high level of the game, particularly at a team like Liverpool; he can cope with pressure and has won silverware. Xabi Alonso appears to have decided not to seek the job at this point in his career, and Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi are two more managers on the list who could be available, but Postecoglou should be their first pick.
Postecoglou is a solid manager who has had success during his career, but we find it difficult to concur with Matteo’s statements.
The former Celtic manager started the season brilliantly with Spurs, but they’ve subsequently slipped to fourth place, 11 points behind the leaders.
The possibility of Alonso succeeding Klopp delighted many Liverpool fans, but you can’t blame him for wanting to stay in Germany and continue the great project he’s working on with Leverkusen.
Sporting, meanwhile, leads the table by four points and has a game in hand on close city rivals Benfica, who are in second place.
The Lisbon-born tactician, who is only 39 years old, may not have as much experience as many of the other management possibilities, but he has shown himself this season.
Anyone will find it difficult to step in and continue the excellent work that the former Borussia Dortmund manager has done over the years, but we’ll have to wait and see who is given the responsibility!
